I’m Karina. I live in Hamilton with my husband and daughter. I was born and raised in New Jersey and lived in and around Washington, DC for 10 years. I moved to Mercer County in 2020.

My pregnancy and the birth of my daughter in 2024 was such an exciting new chapter for my husband and I and that experience brought so much to light for us. We learned firsthand about the gaps in obstetric care.

We sought out doula support that prepared us for options that we didn’t and couldn’t have known were possible with just our regular care team. After experiencing that level of support we were shocked that this type of care is not commonplace and widely available.

My need for support didn’t end with pregnancy and my six week check-up. I found myself every day through my struggle and perseverance thinking of how to create real support for other families.

It was soon after that my opportunity to make a change presented itself. By chance, I met a community based doula in Brooklyn with over 40 years of experience who was just as eager to mentor me as I was to learn. It was through her and my research I learned how to become a community based doula in New Jersey.

It was important to me that my training prepared me for real life situations, had in person instruction, provided trauma based education, and most importantly that it was considered to be a complete education to become a Medicaid provider as a doula in New Jersey which most of the common certifications unfortunately would have left me short of.

I was so lucky to find Ancient Song in Brooklyn, NY. There I completed an intensive 12 week program to become a full spectrum doula with new doulas and many doulas already having decades of birth work experience there to continue their education.

I learned from and about Doulas delivering compassionate, innovative, and trauma informed care to their communities and subject matter experts breaking barriers in their fields. They continue to support me directly and through their community of doulas including previous students and my own classmates
